Hair Removal for Transgender People: Effective and Safe

hair removal for transgender

As a transgender person, you feel that your birth gender doesn't match the gender you would like to (want to) experience or express. You can then transition to change gender completely or partially. During a male-to-female transition, hair problems can occur for which hairpieces are the solution. But besides male pattern baldness, there are many other places on the body for both men and women where hair reduction is very desirable.

Laser Hair Removal for Long-term Hair Reduction

Because certain body hair is experienced as bothersome, shaving, epilating, waxing (with the exception of the face) can offer solutions in the short term. But for the long term, hair reduction and/or permanent hair removal is desirable.

When you've started the physical transformation from male to female, the medications will usually cause body hair to decrease and become softer on their own. This gives you the advantage that relatively fewer laser treatments are needed to achieve the smoothest possible result. Therefore, it's medically more efficient when you've already started estrogen therapy.

Hormonal Treatment Often Not Sufficient

For a transgender woman, hormonal treatment is often insufficient to significantly reduce hair growth in the facial area and genitals. Starting laser hair removal in these areas can therefore be an effective choice. Other bothersome body hair can also be perfectly treated with laser. For a woman with a male body, it's very normal to want to get rid of chest hair.

Special Treatments for Surgery Too

When undergoing gender reassignment surgery, it's necessary to permanently remove hair from (part of) the pubic area. This can prevent ingrown hairs from developing on the inside of the genitals after surgery.
